Week 5 of the IHSA Football season promised the biggest battle of Class 8A heavyweights when (2) Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings traveled to Frankfort to challenge conference rival and (1) Lincoln Way East Griffins in the South Suburban Game of the Week.
Originally scheduled as a Friday night performance but became a Saturday matinee due to the heavy storms to hit the Southland, the roughly 17 hour delay did not disappoint fans as they were treated to a great display of football.
Lincoln Way East Running Back AJ Henning, who has verbally committed to the University of Michigan, was the difference in the 28-14 Griffins victory. Henning had 140 yards on 17 carries and 3 Touchdown runs of 55, 6 and 4 yards. Henning would add a 70 yard punt return to his body of work this afternoon. The Griffin rush attack was augmented by Devon Williams 73 yards on 13 carries and Jamal Johnson's 55 yards, also on 13 carries.
Lincoln-Way East has the inside track on the overall top seed in Class 8A midway through the season, but a rematch in the playoffs is a distinct possibility as the H-F Vikings will be a formidable opponent come playoff time.
In other scores from the Southland:
