The Marist RedHawks travelled north up Pulaski Road to 99th Street to take on long time neighborhood rival Brother Rice Crusaders in the 2019 version of the "Pulaski Road Super Bowl" and the South Suburban Gazette Game of the Week for Week 4. This much anticipated rematch of last year's Class 8A Semi-Final won by the Crusaders did not disappoint and both defenses played well.
Brother Rice generated the first turnover when Jacob Sullivan intercepted a Marist pass giving Brother Rice the ball at the Marist 22 yard line. The Crusaders cashed the great field position in for a Field Goal and a 1st Quarter 3-0 lead.
The RedHawks defense would show their strength when Marist defender Jovan Marsh intercepted a Crusader pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. The extra point gave Marist a 7-3 lead.
Late in the first half, the Brother Rice offense began to click and with just 38 seconds remaining before the break, Crusader QB Ben Somers found WR Jahill Pettis in the corner of the endzone. The extra point put Brother Rice back in the lead at 10-7.
Brother Rice moved the ball on their second possession of the 3rd Quarter, and with 8:25 remaining, Somers threw his second TD pass, this time to Dwayne Moorehead. The conversion gave the Crusaders their largest lead of the night, 17-7.
Both defenses refused to allow many yards but Marist did put together a drive that ended with a "flea flicker" trick play TD to get the RedHawks within a Field Goal, 17-14, with 5:42 left in the game.
Brother Rice's attempt to run the clock out was denied by the strong Marist defense, and the RedHawks got the ball back with three and a half minutes to play. The RedHawks began to drive, but the Crusader defense came up huge with a 3rd Down sack at midfield, followed by an incomplete pass on 4th Down sealed the Brother Rice win.
In other south suburban action, the powerhouse Lincoln Way East Griffins kept rolling towards another state playoff berth by besting Bolingbrook 20-10. Sandburg rebounded by defeating District 230 rival Stagg 30-6. Shepard 45, Evergreen Park 17; Lemont 40, Oak Forest 0; Tinley Park 41, Oak Lawn 6; Andrew 17, Lincoln Way West 7; Notre Dame 28, Providence 7.
