Playoffs?!? Several South Suburban schools in action as IHSA playoffs open

Updated: Nov 16, 2019

The 2019 IHSA state football playoffs opened Friday, and will continue Saturday, and several south suburban schools are represented in the various divisions. Perennial powers Lincoln Way East, Mt Carmel, Marist, and Brother Rice were in action Friday night. As was the resurgent programs of Eisenhower and Richards.

In northwest suburban Bartlett, the hometown Bartlett Hawks (8-1) hosted the Brother Rice Crusaders (5-4). These very two teams met at Brother Rice in the First Round at Brother Rice in 2016. Three years ago Brother Rice was an 8A favorite at 8-1 when the then 5-4 Hawks upset the Crusaders. Turnabout is fair play as Brother Rice used their very strong defense and running game to score a 28-8 upset n the road.

Also in Class 8A: Lincoln-Way East Griffins had no trouble at home defeating Plainfield South 40-0 in Frankfort. Marist late season push continued with an extremely impressive 49-7 win at Glenbard East. Minooka topped Joliet West 20-7, while Fremd ended Plainfield North's season 19-0.

In Class 7A: Mount Carmel remained undefeated and rolled over Eisenhower 55-8, Reavis travelled to central Illinois and lost to Normal Community 36-14, and Yorkville shutout TF South 37-0.

In Class 6A: Richards needed yet another strong defensive performance to outlast Washington 20-16 in Oak Lawn. Shepard lost, in a game that made the scoreboard look like a pinball machine, at Peoria HS in central Illinois, 78-58.

In Class 5A: St. Rita took care of business at home defeating Glenbard South 49-14, St Laurence gave Hillcrest all they can handle before falling 18-15 in Country Club Hills, and Marian Catholic travelled out west to Sterling only to see their season end 56-14.

Saturday First Round action in the south suburbs includes:

Class 8A: Curie at Homewood-Flossmoor, Plainfield East at Gurnee, Bolingbrook at Hinsdale Central.

Class 7A: Lake Zurich at Andrew, Thornwood at Batavia, Lincoln-Way West v Phillips (at Gately Stadium).
