IHSA Playoffs: LW East, Br. Rice, Marist, Mt. Carmel, St. Rita all advance to Semi-Finals

The southside and south suburbs were well represented on Saturday's IHSA Quarterfinal matchups. In Class 8A, the Lincoln-Way Griffins continued their undefeated season with another impressive win, 26-7, over arch-rival Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings. It was the Griffins second win this season over H-F.

The Marist Redhawks continued their late season surge with their second win of the season over Loyola in Wilmette. The Redhawks dominated Loyola, the defending Class 8A State Champions, 41-27. Marist will host Lincoln Way East next Saturday in the semi-final.

The defending Class 8A state runner-up Brother Rice Crusaders punched their ticket to the semi-final for the second consecutive year with a solid 38-21 win over Minooka at Mitchell Field at 99th Street and Pulaski Road. Brother Rice will face Gurnee High School next Saturday for a chance at their second straight state title game appearance.

In Class 7A: Catholic League power Mount Carmel Caravan won the "Southside Super Bowl" defeating Public League juggernaut Phillips 24-8. Former Caravan standout, now Mt Carmel Head Coach Jordan Lynch will lead the Caravan into the semi-final.

Class 6A: South suburban teams did not fare as well as in the other classes. Richards Bulldogs travelled to the Metro East area, the St. Louis suburbs, to face perennial state title contenders East St. Louis High School Flyers. The Flyers scored early and often and ended the Bulldogs 2019 campaign 60-0. Providence Catholic did not fare much better, falling to Chatham Academy of Glenwood 40-16 at home.

Class 5A: Three south suburban teams were in action. St. Rita travelled to Country Club Hills to take on a red hot Hillcrest Hawks team. St. Rita's strong defense held Hillcrest's mighty running game in check and cruised to a 35-8 victory. Joliet Catholic Hilltoppers hosted downstate power Mascoutah at Memorial Stadium. The downstaters ended the Hilltoppers season with a 21-14 win in Joliet.

The semi-finals will be played next Saturday, November 23. The finals will be held for Class 1A-4A on Friday, November 29, Class 5A-8A on Saturday, November 30. All championship games will be held at Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.
